Who is Devin Durrant?
|
Devin Durrant led Provo High School's basketball team to the 1978 3A Utah
State Championship. He scored 38 of his team's 52 points in the final game.
Devin made the All-State team and was named the 3A Most Valuable Player. He
was also named to the McDonald's All-American team and played in various
All-Star games around the country. He graduated from Provo High School with
academic honors.
The Power of Being Your Own Coach
Devin went on to play for four years at Brigham Young University. He was a
starter in every game during his four-year career and was part of WAC
championship teams for three of his four college years. He also competed
three times in the NCAA post-season tournament. He was a two-time selection
to the All-Western Athletic Conference first team and was twice named as a
GTE/CoSida Academic All-American.
During Devin's senior year (1983-84) he became the leading single-season
scorer in BYU history with 866 points. He finished the year as the
third-leading scorer in the NCAA. During that same year he was named
District 7 Player of the Year, Associated Press All-American, Basketball
Writers Association All-American, National Association of Basketball Coaches
All-American, Sporting News All-American, UPI All-American, and John Wooden
All-American.
Devin graduated in the spring of 1984 from Brigham Young University in
American Studies. At that time he was named as a recipient of an NCAA
postgraduate scholarship. Later that summer, Devin was chosen by the Indiana
Pacers as the 25th pick in the NBA draft. He played a season with the Pacers
and part of a second season with the Phoenix Suns.
Devin conducted his own basketball camp for nine years. Most recently, he
worked for three years as an assistant basketball coach for the Timpanogos
High School girl's team. In a Deseret News poll in the year 2000, Devin was
voted one of the top 10 college basketball players in Utah of the 20th
century. In that same year, Sports Illustrated magazine named him one of the
50 most influential sports figures in Utah.
During and after his athletic career, Devin has been a speaker for numerous
youth groups. He has also been actively involved as a volunteer, serving and
counseling hundreds of young adults over the past twenty years.
Devin was born in Brigham City, Utah and raised in Utah and Kentucky. He and
his wife Julie are the parents of six children. Devin owns various real
estate companies.
